Prayers for June 9, 2019 – Day of Pentecost

Filled with spirit and fire, we pray for all believers, the world, and those in need.

A moment of silence

To the words “Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us,” you are invited to respond “Hear our prayer.”

As fire transformed the evolution of human life, let us seek and receive the fire of the Holy Spirit that appeared on Mount Sinai in flames of fire and appeared on the heads of those gathered at the first Pentecost. Make us on fire with compassion, a sure sign of the spirit moving among us.

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

Send cooling breezes when all living creatures suffer from oppressive heat—and make us part of cooling the overheated planet with new ways of living. Save our land from drought and the scourge of wildfires. Bless the work of those who make it possible to harness the power of sun and wind for our use.

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

Use your spirit to dismantle human arrogance and the power that corrupts. Establish those leaders who are humble of heart and fearsome in vision that inspires and changes society. Move us to support the work of CLWR and other international aid agencies and participate in efforts to resettle immigrants and refugees.

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

Breathe through us power and peace when we cry out to you. Bring the fire of life to those living with dementia, anxiety, depression, and addiction. Fill the lungs of those who feel weak and worn with regenerating spirit–especially those we name aloud or silently within our hearts.

(include those listed in the bulletin for prayers)

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

Make the spirit of your love move among families—biological families and the “logical families” we create with kindred spirits. Let us acknowledge and embrace families of all shapes, sizes, and traditions. Bring joy to co parents, single parents, adoptive families, and the families of our friends.

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

Make the fire of faith transform our work with Anglican Church of Canada and Bishop (name bishop in your region), the Roman Catholic churches and Bishop (name bishop in your area) and our own Bishop Greg and Bishop Susan. We offer prayers for the churches of our synod, especially Grace in Burnaby and Pastor Nathan Fong and Mount Zion in Smithers.

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

Connect our spirits with saints past and present, that we may continue our journey of faith driven by inspiration and fuelled by your constancy.

Hagia Sophia, Wisdom of God, move within us. Hear our prayer.

You are breath, you are fire—and we entrust our deepest desires with you. AMEN.
