Fifth Sunday of Easter (May 13, 2012)

(Congregation may be invited to be seated for prayer.)

With the prayer “Lord, of new life” you are invited to respond…
HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1. Enlivened by the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we pray for the life of the church for those in need and for all of God’s creation.

A brief silence.

2. Eternal, loving God, we have been born anew by water and the Holy Spirit. Renew us always through your daily forgiveness, and use us to lead others to your living and healing waters.
Lord, of new life:
HEAR OUR PRAYER.

3. Lord, you continue to call your church into a life of ministry to others. We pray at this time for our neighboring religious communities, for our partner Anglican Church of Canada and for our sister congregations in the BC Synod: in particular we pray for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Victoria and their pastor Ed Mackinley; and for Lutheran Church of the Cross in Victoria their pastor Lyle McKenzie and their pastoral intern, Melissa Hoehn. May all communities of faith and all ministers of the Gospel reflect the love and power of the risen Christ.
Lord, of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

4. You desire to bring justice through your people. Support and sustain those who work for peace among nations and peoples. May our words and our actions be instruments of peace in our church and in our community.
Lord, of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER

5. Send your sustaining spirit to mothers, grandmothers and all who care for children. Give them courage and confidence that God’s baptismal covenant will not fail them.
Lord, of new life:
HEAR OUR PRAYER
6. You are victorious over sin, death, and all that separates us from you. Draw near to all who feel alone and those who are experiencing pain or crisis. In particular we pray for those we now name aloud or quietly in our heart…

Fill all who are need with your healing presence. May our ministry in
this coming week reflect your healing presence.
Lord, of new life:
HEAR OUR PRAYER.

7. All creation springs to life in response to your Word. Remember your preserving and redeeming covenant with creation, and guide us to care for all you have made.
Lord, of new life:
HEAR OUR PRAYER.

8. God you come to us in our trials and you surprise us with daily blessings:
– We thank you for those who have the gift of another birthday or another anniversary, and for those who have known the gift of new life:
– we thank you for your constant reminder that we are to love one another as you have loved us;
– we thank you for your constant reminder that even in our imperfections and failings you love us;
– Finally we thank you for those special blessings we name aloud at this time….

Lord, continue to open our eyes to the work of your Spirit in our lives and the lives of others.
Lord, of new life
HEAR OUR PRAYER.

9. The saints rejoice in being your children through Jesus the Christ. Give us all a child-like faith that conquers fear and mistrust, and bind your family together in your eternal covenant. Trusting in your abundant mercy, God, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray into your care, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. AMEN.

Acts 10:44-48
44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47‘Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

1 John 5:1-6
5Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

John 15:9-17
9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
12 ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.
