Prayers for March 17, 2019 – Second Sunday of Lent

Amidst the 40 days of Lent, let us increase our prayers for believers everywhere, the world, and those in need

A moment of silence

To the words “God of compassion, remake us in your image of acceptance,” you are invited to respond “Hear our prayer.

Remind us daily that we are citizens of your divine kingdom, even as we live in an imperfect and often frustrating world. Humble us with your deep love for us, and nurture us in the willingness and strength to be instruments of your love among the people we encounter day by day.

God of compassion, remake us in your image of acceptance Hear our prayer.

Open our eyes to divine wonder as we observe the subtle changes as our seasons move from winter into the energy and rebirth of spring. Make us hear hymns of praise in the rivers and oceans, the birds and wildlife, our livestock and beloved pets.

God of compassion, remake us in your image of acceptance Hear our prayer.

Keep us from being overwhelmed by the terror and cruelty in the world, that we may not tire from doing what we can to change things. Release those who are imprisoned for telling and living truth that totalitarian governments do not wish to hear.

God of compassion, remake us in your image of acceptance Hear our prayer.

Enable us to be your presence to those who suffer from grief, illness, and stress. Make us advocates for vulnerable children everywhere, and move us to help find ways to address the issue of the many Indigenous youth in foster care.  We pray especially for those we name aloud or silently in our hearts.

Grant peace and consolation to those who long to become parents, but have been unable to conceive or adopt. Ensure that our society continues to improve parenting practices that our children become ever stronger, kinder, and skilled.

Grant us grace and creativity as we walk with the Anglican Church of Canada and Bishop (name bishop in your region), the Roman Catholic churches and Bishop (name bishop in your area) and our own Bishop Greg. We offer prayers for the churches of our synod, especially Faith in Powell River and Our Saviour’s in Prince George and Pastor Fleming Blishen.

Make our personal experience of Lent be one in which we focus more diligently on living for you, praying more consistently, and giving more generously to those who are poor and hurting in a world where plenty exists.

God of compassion, remake us in your image of acceptance Hear our prayer.

All this we wrap in our faith in Jesus, our leader, with whom we walk the sorrowful journey to the humiliation and pain of the cross. AMEN.
