Prayers for October 6, 2019 – Time After Pentecost

Flourishing in faith as wild mustard proliferates, we pray for all believers, the world, and those in need.

A moment of silence

To the words “Let us commit all that we are to you, O God,” you are invited to respond “Hear us and help us.”

Mother Church, make us—women and men alike—nurturers of faith within our congregation and among those whose lives we touch. Give us the courage to speak openly of our faith and its life-giving power. Teach us to seek and find the specific ways in which our personalities and skills can best serve the God who loves us and seeks intimate friendship with us.

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Teach us to make time for “holy leisure,” for times of solitude and contemplation in which we do nothing except ponder the divine mystery of love. Free us from helplessness so that we tend the garden of our earthly home with the tenacity of a mother bear protecting her cub. Remind us daily of every action we can take to make our planet healthy and whole—and let us see other creatures as brothers and sisters.

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Destruction, violence, and hatred plague our world, and many nations are consumed by strife and fighting within and with others. Open our mouths and make us speak up against injustice and participate in movements towards peace and positive relationships. Love us into compassionate encounter with other people and cultures, that nations will change citizen by citizen.

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Continue to transform us through our weekly feast on the bread of your glory and the wine of “your kingdom come.” Open our mouths in prayerful song in the gates of daughter Zion as we rejoice in our freedom from slavery to unholy busy-ness, to belief in the false happiness of possessions and prestige, to stinginess with our time and money.

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Grant help and healing to those who call out to you in their distress, and move us to be with others in their time of pain and loneliness. Reach out to those wearied by their pursuit of goals and idols that blind them to your patient love, to your offer of meaning, purpose, and rekindled connection with people and with the world. We pray for those we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

(include those listed in the bulletin for prayers)

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Teach us to listen and learn as we talk with all people of faith and work with the Anglican Church of Canada and Bishop (name bishop in your region), the Roman Catholic churches and Bishop (name bishop in your area) and our own Bishop Greg. We offer prayers for the churches of our synod, North Thompson Ecumenical Shared Ministry in Barriere and Clearwater and Spirit of Life in Vancouver and Interim Pastor Tim Dutcher Walls.

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Bind us together in this congregation and in our communities, so that connection grows between those of much faith and those with less faith—or even no faith at all. Grant us the humility and courage to speak about how love changes everything. Teach us to find the right words to communicate our beliefs, especially as we commemorate William Tyndale, martyred for his devotion to translating the Bible into English.

Let us commit all that we are to you, O God. Hear us and help us.

Morning has broken in clouds flaming like fire, and we commit all our prayers to you in this new day for living and loving. AMEN.
